The BogStars is the name of a group of people who meet monthly at the Bullingdon Community Centre (term time only) on the second Friday of each month, after the community lunches. (See the ‘activities’ section of this website for further information about the community lunches).
‘The Bogstars’ is an odd name perhaps but if you have walked through the adjacent Lye Valley SSI you will no doubt have passed some of the rare and beautiful flowers of the Grass of Parnassus (BogStar) along the way. We like to think of ourselves as rare and beautiful but that might be stretching it a bit too far, but nevertheless, a vote on the name was taken many years ago and has just stuck!
After the lunch we offer tea, coffee, biscuits and fruit and at 2pm there is the opportunity to stay on and hear a talk by an invited guest, or maybe a demonstration.
On Friday 13th October we have Yvonne Crane coming along with her two guide dogs Velvet and Flo. She will be talking about the journey of a guide dog from birth to retirement.
Then on Friday 10th November Judy Webb will be coming to talk about the Lye Valley Nature Reserve, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). She will tell us about the ongoing work on the reserve and some of the things we can do to help protect this rare oasis that we are privileged to have on our doorstep.
Finally, on Friday 8th December, we have then following:
1 30-2.30 pm: COMMUNITY: Community researcher will present brief outline of her research on community and will ask/discuss with audience their experiences of Community, in particular any thoughts on before and after demolition of the centre.
2.30-3.00 pm: Informal Carol singing for those who enjoy a good Carol. If you can't sing then just sit back and enjoy!
3.00-3.15 pm: Finish our year with small glass of mulled wine and a mince pie.
The talks usually finish around 3.15pm and are free but sometimes we may ask for a small donation, from those who can afford it, to cover speakers' costs.
The number of people coming to the community lunch and talk afterwards has grown month on month. It is very pleasing to see the community coming together socially and we can guarantee all newcomers a warm and friendly welcome.
